Three services run to Japan and all three are good. EMS is 3 to 5 days, up to 30 kg, and the cheapest of the fast options. DHL and FedEx are door to door on a firm date with no 30 kg ceiling, which is what you want for anything urgent, heavy or valuable. We price all three for your parcel and tell you which we would pick.
Japan is one of the better served destinations from this counter. There is a direct flight out of Denpasar, so nothing has to go through Jakarta first, and three services that are all worth using rather than one good one and two fallbacks. EMS runs 3 to 5 days, takes up to 30 kg in a single parcel, and is the cheapest way to get there quickly. We can book it because the counter has been an authorised Pos Indonesia agent since 2014. DHL Express and FedEx run door to door on a committed date, take parcels of any weight, and are what we reach for when the shipment is urgent, expensive, or going to a business. For anything where cost matters more than speed there is Pos Ekspor at 5 to 7 days and Pos Registered at 14 to 30.
Which one is right depends on three things: what it weighs, what it is worth, and whether a date is attached to it. A 25 kg box of snacks for a relative is an EMS parcel. Forty kilos of stock for a shop in Osaka, or a piece of jewelry worth more than the freight, is an express shipment. We put your parcel against all of them and tell you the difference in cost and days before you commit to anything.
Two kinds of parcel go to Japan from here. One is the care package: Indonesians working or studying there, and the families sending them food from home. The other is commercial: Bali brands with Japanese customers, sellers shipping jewelry and apparel, businesses moving stock by cargo, and visitors who found something here and would rather not carry it home.
Read the next section before you pack anything. Japan enforces its import rules harder than any destination we ship to except Australia, and the items people most want to send are the ones most likely to be seized at the border. That part does not change with the courier: a prohibited item is prohibited on DHL, on FedEx and on EMS alike.
What it costs to Japan
Pos Indonesia rates from this counter, by weight. These are what you pay, not a cost we mark up. Over 30 kg, or when the date has to be guaranteed, we quote DHL or FedEx against them and tell you which wins.

Read out of the Pos Indonesia booking system for postcode 80361 on 22 September 2026, and the transit days are their own estimate. Pos Ekspor flies on the DHL network, so the budget option and the express one are often the same aeroplane. Under 2 kg there is also ePacket, from Rp 239.607. Billed on whichever is greater, actual weight or volumetric, which is why we vacuum clothing. Packing, the customs form and insurance are quoted with the parcel in front of us, and we confirm the figure before anything is sent.
What we will put in a box for Japan, and what we will not
We do
- Commercially packaged, shelf-stable food: instant noodles, sealed snacks, kerupuk, coffee, tea, dried goods
- Sealed sauces and pastes with no meat content, such as sambal, kecap and bumbu instan
- Clothing, textiles, resort wear and accessories
- Plated and costume jewelry. Solid silver and gold is restricted by the couriers, so ask before you buy
- Handicraft, homeware, art and small furniture, crated where the item needs it
- Cosmetics and skincare in genuine personal quantities, checked against the limits first
We will never
- Anything with meat as a main ingredient: rendang, abon, dendeng, sausage, bakso, jerky
- Meals and snacks that contain meat, including instant noodles with a meat sachet
- Fresh fruit, vegetables, seeds, plants and soil
- Home-cooked and home-packed food of any kind
- Dairy and egg products
- Anything you would like declared below what it is actually worth
The meat rule is not ours and we cannot make an exception to it, on any service. Japan prohibits meat and meat products arriving by post, and posting them is treated more strictly than carrying them in a suitcase: personal use, a gift label, vacuum packing and a duty-free wrapper make no difference to it. Illegal import carries penalties of up to three years imprisonment or a fine of up to 3 million yen, far higher for a business, and people have been arrested over international parcels. A single meat sachet inside an instant noodle pack is enough to put the whole box at risk, so send us the item list and we will read the labels with you before anything is packed.
What's included
EMS to Japan, 3 to 5 days
Up to 30 kg in one parcel, tracked and insured, and the cheapest of the fast options. Best for care packages and anything under the weight cap.
DHL Express to Japan
Door to door on a committed date, full tracking, no 30 kg ceiling. What we use for urgent shipments, high value goods, and parcels going to a business that is waiting.
FedEx to Japan
The same tier of service as DHL. The two differ by route and by weight band, so we quote both and send your parcel on whichever comes out better that day.
Pos Ekspor and Pos Registered
The budget end: 5 to 7 days on Ekspor, 14 to 30 on Registered. Right for light, low value things where the cost matters more than the calendar.
Item check before you spend anything
We read your list against Japanese import rules first. If something will not clear, you hear it before you have bought the box.
Declarations that clear customs
Accurate contents and values, prepared the way Japanese customs reads them, with the duty threshold explained before you send.
Packing for a long trip
Airtight for food, cushioned for fragile, and vacuum packed for clothing so you stop paying for air.
Regular shipping for sellers
If Japan is a market rather than a one-off, we can hold stock here and ship each order as it comes in. See fulfillment.
Which service should you use?
These are the services we're sending on right now. We'll tell you which one we'd pick for your parcel, and why, before you commit to anything.
| Service | Runs on | Transit | Tracking | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| EMS | Pos Indonesia | 3 to 7 days, by destination | Full, tracked and insured | Up to 30 kg where the route is open. Cheapest of the fast options, though express holds a delivery date more tightly |
| DHL Express | DHL | 4 to 5 business days | Full, door to door | Anything urgent, valuable, or going to a customer who is waiting |
| FedEx | FedEx | 4 to 5 business days | Full, door to door | Much the same as DHL. We pick whichever is better for your route and weight |
| Pos Ekspor | Pos Indonesia, carried by DHL | 5 to 7 business days | Yes | A couple of days slower than DHL direct, and a little cheaper |
| Pos Registered / ePacket | Pos Indonesia | 14 to 30 days, sometimes longer | Limited | Small, light, low value things where cost matters more than speed |
Transit times run from the day your parcel is dispatched, not the day you drop it off, and customs can add a day or two at the far end. Freight is quoted per shipment, since it depends on weight, destination and the carrier's surcharge on the day.

Frequently asked questions
- How long does shipping from Bali to Japan take?
- EMS is 3 to 5 days to most of Japan. DHL Express and FedEx run 4 to 5 business days and hold to the date far more tightly, which is what matters when someone is waiting. Pos Ekspor is 5 to 7 days. Pos Registered is much cheaper and takes 14 to 30 days, which is fine for clothing and wrong for anything with a shelf life.
- Can I send a parcel to Japan with DHL or FedEx?
- Yes, both, and for a lot of shipments they are the better choice. Express is door to door, fully tracked, committed to a delivery date, and has no 30 kg ceiling the way EMS does. We book DHL and FedEx to Japan every week. Tell us the weight and the deadline and we will quote both against EMS so you can see the actual difference rather than guess at it.
- EMS or DHL to Japan: which should I choose?
- Weight, value and deadline decide it. Under 30 kg with no fixed date, EMS is usually the better buy and lands in much the same window. Over 30 kg, or high value, or a date that cannot move, and DHL or FedEx earns the difference: a committed delivery day, door to door handling and a claims process that works. We quote both for every Japan shipment rather than assuming, because the answer flips depending on the box.
- What is the cheapest way to send a parcel from Bali to Japan?
- For speed against price, EMS, for anything up to 30 kg. If the parcel can wait, Pos Registered is cheaper again at 14 to 30 days. Over 30 kg the arithmetic changes and either express or cargo will beat splitting the shipment, so tell us the weight and we will price all of them.
- Which cities in Japan do you ship to?
- All of them. Tokyo, Yokohama, Osaka, Nagoya, Kyoto, Kobe, Fukuoka, Sapporo, Sendai and Hiroshima are the ones we see most, and EMS and the express couriers both cover every prefecture from Hokkaido down to Okinawa. Remote addresses can add a day and, on the express services, a surcharge. Give us the postcode with the quote request and we will tell you if that applies.
- Can I send rendang, abon or dendeng to Japan?
- No, and we will not attempt it on any service. Japan prohibits meat and meat products arriving by post, and rendang, abon, dendeng, bakso and sausage all fall under that, whether they are homemade or factory sealed. It applies to gifts and personal use exactly as it applies to trade. The parcel is seized, and the penalties for the sender are serious.
- What food can I send from Bali to Japan?
- Commercially packaged, shelf-stable and meat-free: instant noodles without a meat sachet, sealed snacks, kerupuk, coffee, tea, dried goods, and sauces such as sambal and kecap. Fresh produce, seeds and plants are blocked by plant quarantine, and dairy and eggs are restricted. Send us the list and we will check it item by item. There is more detail on food and snack shipping.
- Will my recipient in Japan pay import tax?
- Usually not on a small parcel, and the answer does not depend on which courier you use. Goods with a customs value of 10,000 yen or less generally enter Japan free of customs duty and consumption tax, with some exceptions including alcohol, tobacco and leather goods. Above that line, duty plus 10 percent consumption tax can apply, and the courier collects it on delivery. Japan is currently reviewing this threshold, so treat it as the rule today rather than a permanent one, and ask us if the parcel is close to the line.
- How heavy can one parcel to Japan be?
- EMS takes up to 30 kg in a single parcel. DHL and FedEx have no equivalent cap, so a single heavy box goes express rather than being split, and past a certain size air cargo is cheaper per kilo again. Tell us the weight and dimensions and we will work out which of the three is actually cheapest for it.
- Is my parcel insured, and can I track it?
- Every service we book to Japan is tracked, and we send you the number on WhatsApp the moment the shipment is processed. EMS carries insurance as standard. DHL and FedEx are insured to declared value, which is the reason we push express for jewelry and anything else where the contents are worth more than the freight. You can follow any of them from our tracking page.
- Can you ship to Japan regularly for my business?
- Yes. Japan behaves like any other repeat route once the first shipment has established the paperwork. If you already hold a DHL or FedEx account we can ship on your own rates. We can also hold your stock here and pack each order as it comes in, which is what our fulfillment service is for. Message us with the volumes and we will work out which is cheaper for you.
